Shalina Clarke, Rory Hie and Anthony Vasquez were named the USC Wells Fargo Student-Athletes of the Week today (May 19) for the Week of May 12-18.
The sophomore Clarke of the track and field team won the women's 400m intermediate hurdles title at the Pac-10 Championships. She also placed third in the 100m high hurdles and ran on USC's winning 4x100m and fourth-place 4x400m relay teams. In all, Clarke had a hand in 31 of USC's 91 points scored at the conference championships.
Hie, a sophomore on the men's golf team, helped lead USC to its first-ever NCAA West Regional men's golf championship by shooting a 5-under par 211 to finish tied for second in the individual competition. Hie shot a 3-under 69 in the final round, a 2-under 70 in the second round and was even after the first round.
The junior left-hander Vasquez went 2-0 with a 1.04 ERA and a save in three games, helping lead USC to a 4-0 record for the week, including a sweep of the defending NCAA Champion Oregon State Beavers. He pitched the final 3.2 IP in relief in the win at UC Riverside on May 14, then on May 16 vs. Oregon State he pitched two scoreless innings for a save. Finally, on May 17 he pitched 3.0 hitless innings to notch a win. Vasquez was also 5-for-12 (.417) as a batter during the week.
