Soni and Jefferson Named USC's Wells Fargo Student-Athletes Of The Week

Dec. 6, 2007

Swimmer Rebecca Soni and men's basketball player Davon Jefferson today (Dec. 3) were named USC's Wells Fargo Student-Athletes of the Week for the week of Nov. 26-Dec. 2.

Junior Rebecca Soni broke the NCAA record and set a new USC school record in the 200-yard breaststroke on Dec. 1 at the Husky Invitational with a time of 2:07.08. Her time bettered the old record of 2:07.13 by Tara Kirk set at the 2004 Pac-10 Championships. Soni's time is the second fastest ever in the race, behind only Kirk's 2:05.73 at the 2006 American Short Course Championships. Also at the Husky Invitational, Soni won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:00.40. She was also named Pac-10 Female Swimmer of the Month for November.

Freshman Davon Jefferson averaged 20.0 points in USC's two games this week against Big 12 powers Oklahoma and No. 4 Kansas. In his first career start on Nov. 29 vs. Oklahoma, Jefferson scored a career-high 23 points and just missed a double-double by finishing with nine rebounds. On Dec. 2 vs. Kansas, Jefferson started again and scored 17 points. He made 56.5 percent of his shots (13-for-23) in the two games and 77.8 percent of his free throws (14-for-18).
