USC Ready For Annual Track And Field Dual Meet With UCLA

USC-UCLA Meet Entries
THE MEET The USC men's and women's track and field teams take on their UCLA counterparts on Saturday, May 1, at Drake Stadium for the 70th annual track & field dual meet. On Friday (April 30), the women and men's hammer throws will start at 3 p.m. On Saturday , field events will begin at 11:30 a.m. and track events at 12:35 p.m. The meet will be televised on Fox Sports West on Saturday, May 8 at 8 p.m. THE SERIES The Trojans lead the men's series 39-30 . The Bruins have won the last two meets, including last season's 82-81 win at USC. UCLA had a 22-year winning streak (1978-2000, 1982 was nonscoring) snapped by USC in 2001 (USC 82-UCLA 81 at USC). The Trojans won the first 33 dual meets (1934-65) before UCLA's first dual meet victory in 1966 (UCLA 86-USC 59 at the Coliseum). On the women's side, UCLA leads the series history 17-3 and has won the last 11 meets in a row (Jeanette Bolden is 10-0 vs. USC in the dual meet series). USC's last win was in 1992 (USC 80-UCLA 30 at Drake Stadium). SO FAR THIS YEAR FOR THE USC MEN The Trojans, ranked 13th by Trackshark.com, are led by a quality group of sprinters and jumpers and an emerging corps of middle distance runners and throwers. Junior Allen Simms was the 2004 U.S. Indoor and 2003 NCAA Indoor champion in the triple jump and is the Pac-10 record holder in the event with a best of 56-7 1/2. He also is an excellent long jumper with a top mark of 26-3 3/4. Simms is joined in the jumps by three-time All-American high jumper Jesse Williams, a sophomore who transferred to USC from North Carolina State this past fall. In the sprints, USC has three of the top 15 100m marks in the nation, thanks to sophomore Garry Jones (10.26w) and junior Marvin Anderson (10.31) and Phillip Francis (10.35). Those three plus junior team captain Wes Felix have run 39.35 in the 400m relay, the fourth-fastest time in the nation thus far. In the middle distances, the Trojans have nationally-ranked times by sophomore Raphael Asafo-Agyei (1:48.63 for 800m), junior Anthony Heckman (1:49.73, 800m) and sophomore Tomasz Babiskiewicz (3:44.99 for 1500m). Asafo-Agyei is currently injured and could miss the rest of the season. And the Trojans have two young shot putters--sophomore Noah Bryant and redshirt freshman William Denbo--who have topped 60 feet this season. Bryant has a best of 60-11 1/2 and Denbo's best is 60-7 3/4. SO FAR THIS YEAR FOR THE USC WOMEN The Women of Troy, ranked 6th by Trackshark.com, are led by a deep middle-distance corps, a throws corps with a mix of veterans and newcomers and a solid group of sprinters and hurdlers. Seniors Inga Stasiulionyte and L'Orangerie Crawford hold Women of Troy standards in the javelin and shot put, respectively. Stasiulionyte's best of 186-10 is a Pac-10 record, while Crawford's 56-0 is a top 10 conference mark. Crawford also has a best of 209-8 in the hammer. Joining them is freshman Julia Rozenfeld, whose 197-6 is a school freshman mark for the hammer throw. The rising star on the team is sophomore Virginia Powell, who already holds the school record in the 100m hurdles (13.07) and was an All-American as a 2003 freshman. Powell is also an outstanding sprinter, with a PR of 11.39, 10th on the all-time Pac-10 list. Senior Miya Edmonson, with a best of 23.52 in the 200m and 11.60 in the 100m, is one of the top sprinters in the conference, as is junior Alexis Weatherspoon (11.63/23.90). Incoming junior Iryna Vashchuk has been the rock of the middle distance group with a team-leading 2:08.48 in the 800m and 4:17.90 in the 1500m. The latter mark is fourth on the school top 10 list for 1500m. She's backed up in the 800m by junior Gina Clayton (2:08.81) and freshman Treani Swain (2:10.18). In the long distances, senior Julia Budniak is the top steeplechaser, though she has not run the event this season (she has a best of 16:42.65 in the 5000m), while senior Beth Van Alstine has the conference's top mark in the 10,000m (34:29.62). And freshman Michelle Sanford has been outstanding for USC in the jumps, with bests of 43-10 1/2w in the triple and 20-2 1/2 in the long jump. USC's NCAA TITLE HISTORY The Trojan men's program has won an unprecedented 26 NCAA outdoor national titles (including nine straight in 1935-43), plus two NCAA indoor crowns, far more than any other school. In fact, in the history of the NCAA, only the Oklahoma State wrestling program (31) has more national titles than USC men's outdoor track and field. The Trojans also have had 127 individual champions over the years. The Women of Troy won their first NCAA team championship in 2001 at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. The Women of Troy have had 18 individual collegiate champions. USC COACH Ron Allice AT THE NCAAs Trojan coach Ron Allice's men's teams have finished in the top 10 at the NCAAs for seven of the last nine years, including third place finishes in 1997 and 2003. The Trojan men have also captured 10 NCAA individual titles in his time at USC. His women's teams have placed in the top five in five of the last six years, including 2001's NCAA team title. USC women have won 10 NCAA individual championships under Allice. Women of Troy Event Time/Mark RankLAST YEAR'S MEET Trojan sprinter Wes Felix captured the 100m, the 200m and ran legs on two winning relays, but it wasn't enough as the No. 21 UCLA men's track and field team dominated the middle and long distance races to edge the No. 3 USC men, 82-81, in the 70th annual dual meet before 3,087 at USC's Loker Stadium. It was the third-consecutive USC-UCLA men's dual meet held at Loker Stadium to be decided by a single point (the Bruins won 82-81 in 1999 and the Trojans won 82-81 in 2001). The meet between the No. 4 UCLA women and the No. 5 USC women saw the Bruins cruise to a 104-59 victory. Monique Henderson, Lena Nilsson and Sheena Johnson each won two events to help UCLA to its 11th-consecutive dual meet win over the Women of Troy, as the Bruins improved their series lead to 17-3.
