As a 2005 freshman, Smith made 17 appearances with a 5.14 ERA and one save...gave up one run on two hits in an inning of relief in his first collegiate appearance on Feb. 13 against Long Beach State...threw 1 1/3 no-hit innings to earn his first save on March 6 against Nebraska at the Round Rock Express Classic in Round Rock, Texas...longest stint of the season came on April 4 with three innings (one earned run and two hits) at Washington.
High School
He was named to the Fresno Bee All-Star Team in his senior season at Clovis (Calif.) High after going 7-0 in 62 1/3 innings with a 2.70 ERA and 84 strikeouts...he also batted .397 with six home runs and 20 RBI...earned all-conference and all-city first team honors in his junior and senior seasons...threw a no-hitter with 16 strikeouts in his sophomore season...was a two-time all-conference selection on the football team as a defensive end.
