Final Stats

LOS ANGELES - No. 6 USC hammered out seven doubles Sunday and the Trojans salvaged the series with a 12-7 win against No. 16 Long Beach State in non-conference action at Dedeaux Field. The Trojans also did not strike out at the plate for the first time since Feb. 10, 1993, against San Diego State.

Fraser Dizard (1-0) went 5 2/3 innings (5 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 3 SO) to earn the victory for USC (2-2). Freshman Cesar Ramos (0-1) took the loss in his first collegiate start (3 1/3 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 3 BB, 0 SO) for Long Beach State (3-3).

The Trojans scored three runs in the second inning after first baseman Joey Metropoulos led off with a double down the left field line. Right fielder Billy Hart, making his first collegiate start for the Trojans, plated left fielder Spencer Gordon with a sacrifice fly to right and USC head coach Mike Gillespie tapped into his bag of tricks for the third run.

With two outs and runners at first and third, Gillespie called for the double steal against Ramos. Designated hitter Tyler Haskell distracted Ramos enough to allow Brewster to score before being thrown out at second.

"We felt like we had to play well and we needed this win," said Gillespie. "We faced some legitimate pitching this weekend."

Hart (1-for-1, RBI) scored three times while Brewster (2-for-3, RBI) had two doubles. Center fielder Travis McAndrews (2-for-5, 3 RBI) completed the scoring with a two-run homer to right, his first of the season, in the eighth inning.

Long Beach State did not give up as the 49ers scored three times in the ninth. Steve Velazco (3-for-3, RBI) and Brad Davis (2-for-5, 3 RBI) led the way for the 49ers at the plate.

USC will host Loyola Marymount on Tuesday (Feb. 11) at 5 p.m. before playing South Alabama for the first time ever at Dedeaux Field in a three-game series, beginning on Friday (Feb. 14) at 6 p.m. All four games this week will be broadcast live, along with Gametracker play-by-play, on usctrojans.com.
