LOS ANGELES - UC Riverside benefitted from a six-run first inning Tuesday as the Highlanders defeated the USC Trojans, 7-3, in nonconference action at Dedeaux Field. UCR starter Haley Winter (2-1) threw six innings, allowing three runs on six hits with three walks and 10 strikeouts, to earn the win.

UC Riverside improved to 6-8 on the season while USC falls to 2-5 overall.

USC starter Jon Williams (0-1) did not record an out and gave up six runs with two hits, four walks and no strikeouts as 10 Highlanders came to bat in the first inning. Jason Collette hit a two-run, bases-loaded double as part of the six-run rally for the Highlanders.

Joey Metropoulos and Blake Sharpe hit solo homers for the Trojans.

Relievers Cole Ganser and Matt Cassel both had solid efforts for USC as both threw three scoreless innings. Cassel allowed only one walk and struck out four while Ganser did not allow a hit.

The Trojans compete in the Kia Baseball Bash this weekend in Fullerton. USC will face No. 5 Georgia Tech on Friday (Feb. 27) at 2:30 p.m., Oklahoma on Saturday (Feb. 28) at 2:30 p.m. and No. 13 Cal State Fullerton on Sunday (Feb. 29) at 5 p.m. All three games will be broadcast live, along with Gametracker live stats, on usctrojans.com.
