Box Score

LOS ANGELES - Dillon Baird hit three home runs in a six RBI performance Friday as the No. 2 Arizona Wildcats defeated the host USC Trojans, 10-2, in the Pac-10 Conference opener for both teams. Today's game, the first of a doubleheader, was delayed due to a lighting malfunction last night.

The Wildcats (13-3, 1-0) belted five home runs in the game as starter Preston Guilmet (3-1) threw seven innings, allowing two run on seven hits. T.J. Steele went 3-for-5 with a double, home run and two RBI.

Sophomore Kevin Couture (1-1) took the loss after giving up five runs on 10 hits. He did not allow a walk and struck out four batters.

Gaston led off the game with a solo home run on a full count. C.J. Ziegler then singled to left before Baird hit the first of his three homers to right for a 3-0 Arizona lead. Hector Rabago hit a solo home run in the USC second, his fourth of the year. The Trojans (9-9, 0-1) were able to put runners at second and third with no outs in the fourth, but Guilmet worked out of the jam.

Ziegler and Baird did the single, home run sequence again in the sixth for a 5-1 advantage. After reliever Chris McCaffery walked Ziegler in the ninth, Baird completed the hat trick with his fifth homer of the season over the scoreboard in right center.

The second half of tonight's doubleheader starts at 7 p.m. with a noon start for tomorrow's series finale. Both games will be broadcast live, along with Gametracker live stats, on usctrojans.com and TrojanTV All-Access.

Notes: Dillon Baird's three homers tied a USC opponent record for home runs in a game, last accomplished by Washington's Tyler Davidson on May 11, 2002...junior pitcher Daniel Cooper (Costa Mesa/Orange Coast College/Rice) made his first appearance for the Trojans this season, striking out Jon Gaston in the eighth.
