Box Score

LOS ANGELES - Anthony Encinas threw 3 1/3 innings of scoreless relief to earn the victory Tuesday as the USC Trojans defeated the Pepperdine Waves, 4-3, in nonconference action at Dedeaux Field. Encinas rebounded after taking the loss in Monday's 7-3 defeat at Washington.

Matt Cusick and Billy Hart had three hits each for the Trojans (18-9).

Cusick knocked in Zack Kalter with an RBI single in the second and scored on a single by shortstop Blake Sharpe. Pepperdine answered in the third with two runs after Steve Kleen knocked in a run with a sacrifice fly to right and Danny Worth hit an RBI single to score Chad Tracy.

Cyle Hankerd doubled down the left field line in the fifth with two outs for the Trojans. Left fielder Baron Frost followed with an RBI single to center and scored on a double when Hart hit a fly ball over the head of Pepperdine left fielder Luke Salas for a 4-2 USC lead.

Pepperdine (19-10) put together a rally in the seventh with runners at first and second, but USC's Paul Koss entered the game and induced a 6-4-3 double play from Donald Brown.

The Waves loaded the bases again in the eighth with back-to-back singles by Patrick Rooney and Adrian Ortiz and a walk to Salas. Clement was charged with a passed ball, which scored Rooney, before Koss retired David Uribes on a groundout. Koss would retire the side in the ninth to secure the victory for his sixth save of the season with 2 2/3 innings, allowing one unearned run.

USC hosts UCLA in a Pac-10 series beginning on Friday (April 8) at 7 p.m. The UCLA series will continue with a 2 p.m. start on Saturday (April 9) and 1 p.m. on Sunday (April 10).
