Box Score

TUCSON, Ariz. - Sophomore Ian Kennedy (Huntington Beach, Calif./La Quinta HS) struck out 14 batters in eight innings of work Friday as the No. 22/21 USC Trojans shut out the No. 9/10 Arizona Wildcats, 13-0, in Pac-10 Conference action. The Trojans handed Arizona pitcher John Meloan his first loss as a starter after going 17-0 the past two season, scoring eight runs off him in six innings.

With Oregon State's win over Arizona State, USC (27-13, 9-4) pulls to one game behind Oregon State and Arizona for first place in the conference. USC shut out Arizona, 8-0, four years ago when current Chicago Cubs pitcher Mark Prior threw a complete game three-hitter with no walks and 15 strikeouts.

Kennedy allowed just three hits while walking three batters against an Arizona (27-15, 10-3) team that was batting .328 prior to tonight's game. In five Pac-10 starts this season, Kennedy is now 5-0 with a 1.72 ERA (36 2/3 IP, 26 H, 11 BB, 58 SO) and has recorded double digits in strikeouts in four of his last five outings.

Second baseman Hector Estrella went 4-for-5 with three RBI while Matt Cusick went 3-for-6 for the Trojans.

Estrella started things in the second with a two-run triple to right. He then scored on a sacrifice fly to right from freshman center fielder Roberto Lopez. The Trojans added three more runs in the fourth after Blake Sharpe hit a sacrifice fly and Cusick hit a two-run, bases-loaded single.

Darin Vieira blasted his fourth homer of the season with a solo shot to center in the fifth. Billy Hart grounded into an inning-ending double play that scored Sharpe for the Trojans' eighth run of the contest in the sixth. Five more runs scored in the ninth to complete the scoring.

The series continues tomorrow with a 1:05 p.m. start and concludes at 12:30 p.m. start on Sunday (May 1). Tomorrow's game will be televised on FOX Sports Net with Sunday's game on ESPN. Both games will be broadcast live, along with Gametracker live stats, on usctrojans.com.
