THE BREAKDOWN:
Paul (Kasey) Cunningham, a 6-foot-7, 225-pound redshirt freshman forward, is an athletic, physical big man who can rebound and has a knack for scoring. Spent last season serving a medical redshirt working on his ball handling and outside shooting.
2006-07:
Sat out the season as he continued his rehabilitation from left knee surgery during his senior year of high school. Continued to round into form and increased his practice load throughout the season. Made several road trips with the team.
HIGH SCHOOL:
Cunningham averaged 22.0 points, 15.0 rebounds and six blocked shot per game as a senior at Cibola High in Albuquerque, N.M. Led his team to a 13-1 record before suffering a season-ending left knee injury (ACL surgery). Cibola went 8-6 the rest of the season and ranked sixth in the state of New Mexico. Entered the season widely regarded as the top player in the state of New Mexico. Named to the 2005-06 Long Beach Press Telegram's Best in the West second team. As a junior, Cunningham averaged 18.7 points and 14.2 rebounds and was named a first-team Class 5-A all-state selection. He had one game where he grabbed 28 rebounds and another where he pulled down 26.
PERSONAL:
Cunningham was born on July 3, 1988. His father Paul played basketball at UTEP (1981-84), where he was recruited by Tim Floyd who was an assistant coach under Don Haskins.
