Silvey Dominguez, who has 19 years of coaching experience, was named an
assistant men's basketball coach at USC on June 3, 1996, and is in his
fifth year with the Trojans.
Dominguez, 47, came to USC from St. Mary's College in Moraga, Calif.,
where he had been an assistant coach for five years (1992-96). Prior to
that, he was an assistant at the Air Force Academy for three years
(1989-91), Colorado State for two years (1987-88), Southern Colorado for
two years (1985-86) and Western New Mexico for three years (1980-82).
"Silvey is one of the top recruiters in the country and he brings a lot of
defensive knowledge to our program," Bibby said. "He learned a great deal
when he was at Colorado State working under Boyd Grant, who is one of the
very best defensive coaches in the country. Silvey will certainly help us
tie up recruiting in California. He knows Northern California as well as
Southern California."
At St. Mary's, Dominguez' primary responsibility was coordinating the Gael
defense, which ranked first in the WCC in 1991-92, allowing just 66.6
points per game. In 1994-95, St. Mary's surrendered an equally stingy 66.8
points per contest under Dominguez' guidance.
Dominguez graduated in 1975 from New Mexico with a bachelor's degree in
Spanish. He earned his MBA from Western New Mexico in 1981.
A native of Grants, N.M., Dominguez was born on Oct. 5, 1952. His wife's
name is Deborah.
