The 2002 USC football team finished as the nation's No. 1 team in a pair of computer rankings, the Sagarin poll and the Matthews/Scripps Howard poll.

The Sagarin rating, developed by mathematician Jeff Sagarin, appears weekly in USA Today. His is one of seven computer rankings used to determine the BCS standings.

The Matthews/Scripps Howard rating is compiled by college mathematics professor Herman Matthews, a computer expert who has provided the rankings for the national Scripps Howard News Service for the last 15 years.

USC went 11-2 in 2002, winning the Orange Bowl after tying for the Pac-10 championship. The Trojans were ranked No. 4 in the final AP and ESPN/USA Today polls.
