Senior co-captain Richard Gosper qualified for the `B' final of the 50-yard freestyle, coming within 0.04 of breaking his own school record in the process, to lead USC on the first day of the 2008 NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way, Wash., on Thursday (March 27).

Gosper swam a 19.58 to qualify 13th and earn a second swim, just off his 19.54 set last December. In his second NCAA appearance, he guaranteed himself his first individual scoring result. The 19.58 was the second-fastest swim in school history.

USC's 400y medley relay snuck into the `B' final as well, the quartet of juniors Ankur Poseria and Vanni Mangoni and seniors Bryce Elser and Gosper going 3:15.71, a season best effort.

The same unit, in the order of Gosper, Elser, Poseria and Mangoni, swam 1:20.64 in the 200y free relay, finishing 20th.

Mangoni competed in the 200y IM, but was disqualified on an illegal turn. An All-American last year in the 400y IM, he will have a chance to swim that on Friday.

Finals tonight begin at 7 p.m.
