Final Stats

Murphy Troy had a match-high 15 kills along with 6 digs, while teammate C.J. Schellenberg added 13 kills, 5 digs, 3 aces and 3 blocks to help the No. 11-ranked USC men's volleyball team sweep No. 14 UC Santa Barbara, 30-23, 30-26, 30-19, in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match on Friday (Jan. 11) in USC's Galen Center.

USC-which snapped a 7-match losing streak to UCSB-improved to 2-3 overall and 1-1 in the MPSF, while the Gauchos dropped to 1-4 and 0-2.

Troy, just a freshman, hit .571 in the match and Schellenberg hit .458. Trojan Juan Figueroa added 10 kills, Andrew Vernon had 4 blocks and Luke Morris had a match-best 9 digs.

For UCSB, Jeff Menzel had 14 kills, Sam Moisenco had 4 blocks and Phil Matthews hit .571 with 9 kills and 5 digs.

USC hit .426 and had 9.0 blocks to the Gauchos' .210 and 5.5.

USC was in control of the first game from the start, never trailing after forging a 3-1 lead and hitting .500 overall. After falling behind 25-24 in the second game, USC scored the next 5 points to gain control of that game. In the third game, USC broke away from a 15-15 tie on Gaucho serving error and a combo block from Vernon and Figueroa to post a lead it never relinquished. The Trojans used an 8-0 run to get to match point.

USC next travels to Northern California for a pair of MPSF matches, facing Pacific on Jan. 16 and then No. 5 Stanford on Jan. 18.
