LOS ANGELES - Jose Delgado had 20 kills and teammate Matt Carere added 18 kills and 8 digs to help the No. 4-ranked Hawaii men's volleyball team beat No. 14 USC, 30-18, 30-26, 27-30, 30-24, in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match on Monday (Feb. 27) in USC's Lyon Center.
The Warriors improved to 10-4 overall and 8-3 in the MPSF, while Troy fell to 8-10 overall and 5-8 in the MPSF. It was USC's 11th consecutive loss to the Rainbows.
Lauri Hakala had 14 kills and 5 blocks for Hawaii, while Dio Dante and Maulia La Barre each had 6 blocks.
For USC, Juan Figueroa had 20 kills, Joao Grangeiro added 12 kills and 10 digs and Jimmy Killian had 6 blocks.
Hawaii jumped on the Trojans early in the first game, building a 10-5 lead that kept expanding behind the Warriors .548 hitting percentage in that game. In the second game, Hawaii fought back from a 20-15 deficit to gain a 26-24 lead that held up. The third game was tied at 15-15 when USC scored the next 3 points to give it a lead it never relinquished. The final game remained tight until Hawaii scored 6 unanswered points to forge an insurmountable 29-23 lead.
The Warriors outhit (.352 to .221) and outblocked (.18.5 to 11.5) the Trojans.
USC and Hawaii play again on Tuesday (Feb. 28) in another MPSF contest in USC's North Gym at 7 p.m.
