Juan Figueroa had 15 kills and 8 digs, while C.J. Schellenberg added 13 kills and 2 aces and Matt Pavlovich had 12 kills while hitting .500, to lead the No. 13 USC men's volleyball team to a 30-22, 30-17, 30-24 non-conference win over Quincy on Thursday (March 8) in USC's Galen Center in the first-ever meeting between the schools.
USC improved to 7-11 overall, while Quincy fell to 3-15. It was USC's first 3-game home sweep in 2007.
The Trojans outhit the Hawks, .296 to .077, and had more aces (7 to 1) and digs (30 to 20), but Quincy recorded more blocks (10.5 to 5.0).
John Markendorf and Zach Splitt each led Quincy with 6 kills, while Dan Dresen and Robbie Coughlin each had 4 blocks and Mike Contee had 9 digs.
For USC, setter Gio Altamura started in place of Jimmy Killian, who rested a sore ankle, and posted 41 assists, while Luke Morris had a game-high 13 digs.
It didn't take USC long to jump out to a lead in any of the 3 games. In the first game, USC forged a 7-4 margin that it never gave up while hitting .333. Then, in the second game, the Trojans ran off 5 straight points to open up a 17-10 edge and were never threatened while hitting .467. USC used a 3-0 run early in the third game to gain a 7-4 edge and used it to cruise to the victory.
USC next plays a pair of exhibition matches against its alumni this Saturday (March 10) at 3 and 5 p.m. in the Galen Center, then hosts non-conference foe Rutgers-Newark on Tuesday (March 13) at 7 p.m. in the Galen Center.
