Freshman Lizette Salas is tied for 14th and sophomore Stefanie Endstrasser is tied for 19th as they led the No. 4 USC women's golf team on the first day of the 2008 Wildcat Invitational at the Arizona National G.C. in Tucson on Monday (Feb. 25).
USC is in eighth at 12-over 296, nine shots back of first-place No. 3 Arizona State (287). The highly competitive field includes No. 1 UCLA, No. 2 Duke, No. 7 Auburn, host No. 8 Arizona, No. 12 Cal, No. 18 Pepperdine and No. 19 Vanderbilt.
Salas' 1-over 72 included three birdies. She was 2-under with five holes to go during a first round that started on the 10th hole, but lost a bit of ground with a triple bogey on the par 5 5th hole. She is five shots off the lead.
Endstrasser's 2-over 73 opened with a 2-over on the front 9, but was even on the back 9, thanks in part to a pair of birdies.
Sophomore Belen Mozo is tied for 30th at 3-over 74. She battled back from a 4-over front 9 to go 1-under on the back 9.
Senior Dewi Claire Schreefel is tied for 50th at 6-over 77 and senior Paola Moreno is tied for 64th at 7-over 78.
Playing individually (and not counting toward the team totals), freshman Joanne Lee is tied for 39th at 4-over 75 and junior Victoria Alimonda is tied for 64th at 7-over 78.
