Senior Paola Moreno fired her second consecutive sub-70 round while senior Dewi Claire Schreefel and sophomore Stefanie Endstrasser were also under par to lead the No. 1 USC women's golf team into first place on the first day of the 2008 NCAA West Regional on Thursday (May 8) at the Lincoln Hills G.C., in Lincoln, Calif.

USC finished with a combined 5-under 283, four shots ahead of second-place Tulsa (287). UNLV was third (288), Arkansas was fourth (291), Oklahoma State was fifth (293) and four teams were tied for sixth at 295. The top eight teams plus two individuals from each of the three 21-team regions playing this weekend will advance to the championship round, scheduled for May 20-23 at the University of New Mexico Championship G.C, in Albuquerque, N.M.

USC, which won the Central Regional each of the past two years (first at Texas A&M and then at Michigan), is trying to make its 11th straight NCAA Championship final, all under 12th-year head Coach Andrea Gaston. It is also Troy's 17th straight NCAA appearance overall. Troy won its only NCAA team title in 2003.

Moreno was 2-under on the front 9 with birdies on the 3rd and 4th holes. She birdied 10 to go 3-under and, after a bogey on 12, came back with birdies on 15 and 17 to finish with a 4-under 68, tied for the lead with Arizona's Alison Walshe. It was one off the season-low she set in the final round of the 2008 Pac-10 Championships, which she won.

Schreefel was virtually flawless through the first 12 holes with birdies on 8, 10 and 12 before bogeys on 14 and 16 dropped her to 1-under 71, tied for ninth overall. Endstrasser is also tied for ninth after a birdie on 17 dropped her to 1-under. She also birdied the 2nd and 8th holes to offset bogeys on 9 and 11.

Freshman Lizette Salas is tied for 25th at 1-over 73. She birdied the 3rd and 10th holes. Senior Belen Mozo is also 1-over with a birdie on 10 and bogeys on 4 and 16.

Action continues Friday and Saturday.
