Marketa DeQuine enters her first season as assistant coach with the USC rowing program. A former Trojan rower herself (1999, 2001-2003), DeQuine returns to her alma mater and brings a wealth of experience from both inside and outside of the boat to a surging USC program. Her main duties will be to coach the novice rowers and assist with the Varsity Four.
DeQuine comes to USC from the Everett Rowing Association in Everett, Wash. where she served as the Women's Head Coach; guiding the crew to its most successful season in club history. Under her direction, the crew captured the overall points trophy at the 2007 Brentwood Regatta in Brentwood Shores, Canada and became the only junior women's team at the Junior Nationals to return to the Varsity Eight Final for three consecutive years.
Developing a special winter conditioning program for both the men's and women's crews, her system put twenty-three young women in the U.S. High School Rowing National Championships in Cincinnati, Ohio, qualifying the most female athletes of any women's rowing team at the 2007 Junior Nationals.
Her coaching senses made DeQuine the perfect choice as a volunteer novice coach with the USC program in 2003, following the expiration of her student-athlete eligibility. That season, the USC Novice Eight qualified for the Pac-10 Championship Grand Final for only second time in program history. In the fall of 2004, DeQuine went from USC to coaching the Junior Women's Crew for a year at the Newport Beach Aquatic Center.
DeQuine was a four-year letterwinner on the USC rowing team and rowed with the Varsity Eight from the No. 4 seat in each of her four seasons. Among her highlights as a Trojan, she served as team captain in 2003 when the Varsity Eight finished sixth at the NCAA Championships and was twice named to the Pac-10 All-Academic team in 2002 and 2003.
Although she sat out the 2000 season with a stress fracture in her vertebrae, she recovered well enough to be a major factor in USC's success in 2001. That season, she helped lead the Varsity Eight to a then program-high fourth place finish at the NCAA Championships and also helped the Trojans capture their first Jessop-Whittier Cup Championship at the San Diego Crew Classic. As a freshman, she placed sixth in the world and second among collegiate rowers at the 1999 C.R.A.S.H. B Indoor Rowing Championships in Boston, Mass.
In 1996, she was named the Best Rower of the Czech Republic as a four-year member of the Czech Women's National Team and a three-year Junior National Team member. Throughout her rowing career, she competed at the Junior World Championships in Scotland (1998) and Belgium (1997) as well as the World Rowing Championships in Germany (1998) and the World Indoor Rowing Championships (1998, 1999). DeQuine was a ten-time Czech National Champion.
Born June 19, 1979, she is a native of Trebon, Czech Republic. Her father, Vaclav Vochoska, won two Olympic medals in rowing: a bronze at the 1976 Montreal games in the quadruple sculls and a bronze at the 1980 Olympic games in Moscow in the double sculls.
While at USC, she was a German language major at and is fluent in English, Czech, German and Russian. Her expertise in languages landed her at the General Consulate of the Czech Republic where she worked under the Consular Department Officer. She currently resides in Los Angeles, Calif. with her dog Ty.
