No. 10 USC began its 26th NCAA appearance with a decisive 4-0 win over MAAC champion Marist in an NCAA Championships Women's Tennis first-round match at USC's Marks Stadium on Friday (May 9).

USC, after its eighth team title, improved to 18-7. Marist, making its second straight NCAA appearance, dropped to 10-9.

Troy's No. 3 doubles team of Cristala Andrews and Maria Sanchez downed Marist's Mirelva Colon and Natalie Fouche, 8-0, for the first doubles win. USC then clinched the doubles point as Amanda Fink and Gabriela Niculescu defeated Erin Godly and Alexa Strange, 8-0.

USC made equally quick work of the singles competition. Niculescu, at No. 3 singles, defeated Alexa Strange, 6-0, 6-0, for the Women of Troy's first singles point while Sarah Fansler, at No. 4, followed with a same-score win over Mirelva Colon to put Troy up 3-0. Leyla Entekhabi clinched the team win at No. 6 singles with a 6-1, 6-1, win over Fouche.

USC will play Pepperdine in the second round at 3 p.m. on Saturday.

USC Coach Richard Gallien: "It's a good way to start. The team was coming off a tough week of finals and was eager to return to play. We showed some rust, but it was good to get through to the second round."

Marist Coach Roge Nesbitt: "It was a good trip and a huge honor. The team was very excited to come to Los Angeles to play. We did some very good things today. Cassie Strange battled really well at No. 2 singles. She and her sister, Alexa, are from Southern California, so it was good for them to play in front of a home crowd. The trip was a good experience for us."
