Nollan was the head coach for the boys' varsity volleyball team at Campbell Hall High in North Hollywood, where he graduated in 1996. He began working with the volleyball teams there in 1998 when he was hired as the girls' volleyball varsity assistant coach. That season, he helped lead the team to the CIF Southern Section semifinals.

In 1999, he added to his responsibilities as the boys' junior varsity head coach. Nollan was promoted to head coach of both the girls and boys varsity volleyball teams in August 1999. As a player at Campbell Hall, he lettered all four years at setter and garnered various accolades, including two-time All-Alpha League first team, 1996 Los Angeles Times all-county second team and 1996 All-CIF Division III first team. He also spent six years playing club volleyball.
