Final Stats

TUCSON, Ariz. -- Whitney Dosty had a match-high 20 kills and hit .429 (20-5-35) as the Arizona Wildcats defeated the No. 11 USC Women of Troy, 3-2 (21-25, 25-21, 20-25, 25-16, 16-14), in a Pac-10 Conference match at the McKale Center.

Jacy Norton had 12 kills in a .556 performance (12-2-18) with five blocks for Arizona (13-6, 3-4) while Tiffany Owens had 18 kills and eight blocks. Paige Weber recorded 61 assists with four kills, two aces, six digs and two blocks.

Jessica Gysin led USC (10-6, 3-4) with 14 kills, 11 digs and four blocks. Freshman middle blocker Lauren Williams hit .524 (13-2-21) for the Trojans with 13 kills and six blocks. Williams was perfect at the start, recording kills in 11 straight attempts. Alex Jupiter added 11 kills for USC while Taylor Carico recorded 47 assists with five kills and nine digs.

Owens' service ace gave the Wildcats the 6-2 lead in the first set. USC came back with three straight points, capped by Roleder's ace. At 10-8 Arizona, the Women of Troy used Garrett's slide kill to spark at 6-1 run to take the lead at 14-11. Williams used a kill, followed by a solo block as USC pushed the lead to five at 18-13. Norton cut the deficit to three at 20-17, but the Trojans held off the Wildcats as Williams won the joust at the net for the set winner.

Arizona worked to a 7-5 lead in the second set before a Gysin/Garrett block gave USC an 8-7 advantage. Both teams traded points at 11-10 in favor of Arizona and Buringrud's ace later gave the Wildcats a three-point lead at 17-14. UA added two more points before Garrett's slide kill pushed the momentum back on USC's side. Geena Urango beat the triple block from the back row as the Trojans trailed by two, 19-17. A Wildcat service error made it a one-point set, but Arizona responded with a 4-1 run as Norton sliced one from the middle to even the match.

The Wildcats took a slight lead at the start of the third set before Gysin went back-to-back to tie it at 12-12. Stephanie Snow's kill started a 4-1 run as the Wildcats looked to take control at 18-15, but two straight attack errors would hurt Arizona. USC would roll a lucky seven as Carico's 310 kill made it a 22-18 USC lead. Garrett tallied two more kills and Carico wrapped up set three with the service ace.

Owens hit two straight down, followed by a Norton kill as Arizona took the 8-3 lead in the fourth set and would not relinquish the lead. The Wildcats iced the set away at 16-12, rattling off six straight points to send the match into the fifth set.

UA carried the momentum into the final set with a 4-1 run at the beginning. USC went to Jupiter for back-to-back terminations for a 6-5 lead in favor of Arizona. Owens took care of an overpass to make it 7-5 and both sides swapped a point. Down 8-6 on the side switch, Carico put down another 310 kill as USC later took the lead on Gysin's slam at 9-8. Snow and Dosty put the Wildcats back in the lead before the Trojans retook the lead at 11-10, thanks to Garrett and Gysin. Buringrud tied the set and Roleder's attack sailed long as UA went up again, 12-11. Gysin tied it at 12 apiece and an error by Owens later made it a 13-13 score. Roleder served long to give match point to the Wildcasts, but Jupiter came through to tie it at 14-14. Norton put another one down and a tough serve forced Jupiter's attempt long as the Wildcats won the match.

USC returns home for Pac-10 Conference action next weekend. The Women of Troy host Stanford on Friday (Oct. 24) at 8 p.m. in a match that will be broadcast on FOX Sports Net, followed by a match against Cal on Saturday (Oct. 25) at 7 p.m.
