Haden and McKay

It was a celebration to remember.

Quarterback Pat Haden and receiver J.K. McKay, teammates at Bishop Amat High School before moving on together to USC, combined on a 38-yard touchdown pass to put the Trojans in position for a 18-17 victory over Ohio State in the 1975 Rose Bowl.

"It was nothing new," said McKay. "That's been going on since high school.

"When your're a football player," said the son of the USC coach, "you go to bed at night and you dream of catching a touchdown pass to win the Rose Bowl, and I did it. I've been dreaming of this since I was six years old."

Almost as close as brothers, Haden even lived in the McKay home during their senior years in high school after Haden's parents moved to the Bay area.

"I had some really strong feelings," said Haden. "First, it was my last game with young John McKay. I've been with him a long time.

"Second, it was my last game for coach John McKay. He's been awfully good to me, and I wanted to play well for him.

"Third, there were the seniors. We've come a long way. We've cried, smiled and laughed together, and we wanted to go out winning together."
